Dental local anesthetics temporarily block pain
in specific areas of the mouth during procedures.
They work by preventing peripheral nerves
from sending pain signals to the brain,
allowing patients to undergo treatments
like fillings, root canals, and extractions without discomfort,
while being awake and alert.
Patients can still possibly feel some pressure.
Lidocaine with epinephrine is used the majority
of times because it helps to prolong the anesthetic
effect and reduces bleeding during procedures.
