The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC 

was established in 1897 as the first dental 

school in Southern California, and is located in Los Angeles, California. 

Alumnus Herman Ostrow gave a $35 million naming gift in 2010, thus the name change.

USC Dental first opened in 1897, graduating its first class of 11 students in 1900.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) systems are used 

with small-group interactive case discussions instead 

of traditional mass lectures to prep students for modern board standards.

As of 2026 for four years, the school totally costs 

$536,779 for direct school fees to $667,868–$730,000 

when accounting for total Cost of Attendance (COA) 

including mandatory equipment and living expenses.

The Current Dean is Yang Chai DDS, PhD 

and he is the G. Donald and Marian James 

Montgomery Professor of Dentistry and a 

University Professor of Dentistry, Stem Cell Biology 

and Regenerative Medicine, and 

Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
